Basis of the edition

The present edition is based on the photographs available at the Mainzer Photoarchiv of the Hethitologie Portal Mainz, as well as the available hand-copies and relevant secondary literature up to 2019. When the original manuscripts have been collated, this is noted in the commentary.

Commentary

The fragment preserves cult image descriptions (note a statuette of ivory, spelled as ZU9 SI.AM for ZU9 AM.SI in obv. 4′), festival descriptions, and remarks on the state of the cult (obv. 10′, 12′).

obv. 5′: The female statuette cannot refer to the divine river Maliya as it has usually been assumed (Rost 1963: 192, RGTC 6 538, Taracha 2009: 115 with fn. 624, Serangeli 2015: 377 with fn. 4), since traces of two verticals are clearly visible before the sign MA, which are not compatible either with a reading DINGIR or with ÍD, and furthermore there would be too much space left at the beginning of the line (nothing apart the divine name is expected at the beginning of the line). On the other hand, the correct reading cannot be Malimaliya (divine mountains are male, and the traces do not fit well a reading LI).

3′: The restoration is tentative.

4′: See HZL no. 86 for SI.AM used for AM.SI.

6′: The partially preserved DN is read “Dku-na-ḫé-[” in van Gessel 2001: 1037, but the first sign is a clear MA. The last preserved sign may be AT, LA or GAN.

7′: Mount Arwaliya is perhaps identical with mount Warwaliya attested in KUB 38.6 iv 19′.
